LAHORE - The Chubacha Underpass on Canal Road is being built on greenbelts.

The government had planned the so far longest underpass of Lahore from Mughalpura Chowk to Royal Palm Golf and Country Club for better traffic management. However, greenbelts along the canal road have been destroyed. Previously, the area near Griffin Colony had greenbelts on both sides of the Canal Road. Currently, it presents the look of a war-ravaged zone due to tree felling and digging all around.

A small patch of greenbelt is left along the under-construction site but it is said to be occupied by influential residents of the colony.  The greenbelt in front of Royal Palm Club has been razed to build the underpass while the greenbelt opposite the club has been encroached upon by residents of houses 1 to 6, neighbours said.

They said they have raised their voice about the issue time and again, but to no avail. They alleged that administration of a local mosque had encroached the state land and blocked the road. They called upon the authorities to look into the issues facing the locality.

Food points sealed

The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) sealed two food points over providing unhygienic condition and discarded 1300 litres of adulterated milk in metropolis Thursday.  More than a thousand kg substandard food items were also seized while  two hotels were imposed Rs7,000 fine.
