LAHORE -  PPP chief Asif Ali Zardari yesterday hurled verbal attacks at his political opponents, claiming his party will win the next general elections.

He called Mian Nawaz Sharif a “paper lion”, who sat in London to avoid appearance in the NAB court. Zardari also accused him of pushing the country towards martial law.

Addressing the PPP activists and party ticket-holders from Gujranwala division at Bilawal House, he also castigated the PTI chief Imran Khan alleging that his entire family was financially dependent on the income from Shaukat Khanum Hospital.

Nawaz Sharif allotted him a piece of land [for Shaukat Khanum Hospital] while Shaheed BB allowed him duty free import hospital machinery”, he said, adding, that “Niazi Khan” has not been able to tell the people about his source of income.

Zardari also questioned Khan’s credentials to make a new Pakistan.

How could a person make a new Pakistan whose tales of immorality were making rounds in the world. “Perhaps, his father also had stigma [attached to his career]”, he added.

He said he had not seen any change in KPK province except for a bridge.

Zardari also took jibes over PTI chief’s offshore companies and his career as a cricketer.

“If he plays cricket, he calls himself “Khan”, and when it comes to establishing offshore companies, he becomes “Niazi”.

Talking about Mian Nawaz Sharif, he said that some people were taking credit of CPEC, but they did not what exactly the CPEC was about.

He said that it was he who had negotiated CPEC with the Chinese leadership.

He alleged that Nawaz government was heading towards a default forcing the country to seek help from the IMF. In this way, he added, the PNL-N was indirectly inviting the Army to take control of government’s affairs.

The PPP leader criticided NAB for arresting Sharjeel Memon while sparing the Sharif family who were facing a VIP-style accountability.

He said that the “Princess” [Maryam Nawaz] would appear before the court in a protocol of 40 vehicles.

“I was arrested first and then cases were instituted against me”, he said, adding, that he remained in CIA’s custody [in 1996-97] without any charges framed against him.

He said that former President Ghulam Ishaq Khan had implicated him in 11 cases which he fought while remaining in prison. He also mentioned the days of his incarceration during the PML-N tenure.

PPP will win every free, fair election: Bilawal

Staff Reporter from Islamabad adds: PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Thursday said that his party will win every free, fair and transparent election.

Addressing a meeting of the Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) chapter of the party here, he said that the GB has elected a PPP candidate in by-elections which showed that the people will elect PPP candidates whenever elections were free, fair and transparent.

PPP Secretary General Syed Nayyar Hussain Bukhari and PPP GB President Amjad Hussain were also present.

Bilawal said that former president Asif Ali Zardari fulfilled the promise made by the late Benazir Bhutto by giving G-B a province-like status. “Now, the G-B has its own governor, the chief minister and the cabinet,” he said.

The PPP chief said that it was necessary to hold elections in GB with the rest of the country and this measure will strengthen the Federation.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Syed Khurshid Shah, Opposition Leader in the Senate Chaudhry Aitezaz Ahsan, senators Sherry Rehman, Farhatullah Babar, Salim Mandviwala, Secretary General PPP Syed Nayyar Hussain Bukhari, Senator Sabir Baloch and Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar called on Bilawal.

“The political situation in the country was discussed at the meeting. The PPP chairman was apprised of the performance of the party in the National Assembly and Senate,” said a party statement.

Separately, PPP leader Saeed Ghani said that bad days had started for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan.

Reacting to Khan’s appearance before the Election Commission of Pakistan and pleading for pardon, he said the PTI leader should also appear before the anti-terrorism court as it had already declared him an absconder.

Ghani asked Khan to declare his source of wealth as he lived a lavish life without any known source of income. “Imran Khan will have to be accountable for the financial account of Shaukat Khanum hospital,” he said.
