GILGIT (APP) - Four persons including two police personnel were shot dead in different incidents of violence following a blast in a bookshop on Airport Road in Gilgit on Saturday, Home Secretary Gilgit-Baltistan said. Two police personnel and two civilians were killed in violence, Home Secretary Muhammad Usman confirmed. A locally-made device went off in busiest market of Gilgit in which four people were injured, one of them later succumbed to his injuries at hospital, said police official Khurshid Alam. Four people were also injured in the blast and one of them breathed his last at DHQ Hospital Gilgit. This sparked strong reaction and the enraged protesters started pelting shops with stones and vandalising on roads as a group also got into an encounter with police. Some miscreants fired on police too and one police personnel was shot dead, Police Superintendent Ali Sher said. He also confirmed that some unknown miscreants also fired at a police van. As a result, a police constable suffered serious bullet injuries. He later succumbed to his injuries at DHQ Hospital. Police also said a 15-year-old boy Kamran Hussain was also among the dead. Punjab Rangers and police stepped up security on roads and increased patrolling. Police said some suspects were taken into custody for investigation and would conduct more raids to arrest real culprits. The markets deserted soon after the clashes and hustle and bustle disappeared.
