JOHANNESBURG (Agencies) - Pakistan defeated India by 54 runs at SuperSport Park Saturday in the ICC Champions Trophy 2009. It is first victory for Pakistan over the arch-rivals in any major ICC competition. Chasing a target of 303, India was bundled out for 248 in the 45th over. Rahul Dravid anchored the Indian inning for much of the period and top scored with 76 in 103 balls. But the target proved too much despite significant contributions by Gutam Gambhir 57 and Suresh Raina 46. For Pakistan, Muhammad Aamer, Rana Naved, Saeed Ajmal and Shahid Afridi Shoaib Malik was declared man of the match for his magnificent 128. During the prize distribution ceremony, Pakistan team Captain Younis Khan said, It was a professional performance. We had a good start. Fantastic knocks from Yousuf and Malik. I thought we would reach 320 in the end but we didnt hit too many runs in the last Powerplay. The boys were very keen ... Ajmal has performed every game and Afridi, in the last couple of years, has been fantastic with his all round performances. We are still hungry. If we can defeat Australia in the next game, it would be nice. The man of the match Shoaib said, When I started my batting, I just kept one thing at the mind; to stay at the wicket. It wasnt easy wicket as the ball was not coming to the bat. Yousuf came and told me to stay at the wicket. Dont worry about the target. he is a very experienced player. When we were about 200, there we decided that 300 is [possibility]. We succeeded. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has congratulated the Pakistan team for winning their ICC champion trophy match against India in South Africa. The premier in his massage praised the cricketers performance and said it was a team effort that helped them wining the important match. He hoped that the team would continue to play in the tournament with the same zeal and coordination, which they displayed against India.
