SYED DANISH HUSSAIN & FOZIA AZAM ISLAMABAD - The power tussle at one of the federal capitals main hospital, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), took a new twist on Saturday, when accouple of ruling partys ministers and leaders visited the protesting faculty members of cardiac department and held negotiations with them. Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira, Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Babar Awan, Chairman Pakistan Bait-ul-Mall Zamurad Khan and other party leaders visited the hospital at a time when scores of senior faculty members, trainee doctors, paramedical staffers and other lower staff of the hospital along with a number of civil society representatives were busy in chanting slogans against the indifferent and negligent behavior of Executive Director, PIMS and health ministry officials. Upon his (Qamar Zaman Kaira) arrival at administration block, protesting doctors and trainee doctors raised full throated slogans. However, assuring his full support to the protesters, Qamar Zaman Kaira said that he would take up the issue with the Health Minister. However, an official of the Ministry of Health, privy to the developments, on condition of anonymity, said that the ministry was under immense pressure over this particular issue, however, he insisted that the new appointee is the senior most and eligible for the said post. It is worth mentioning here that the protest triggered when the Ministry of Health appointed Dr Naeem Tareen as the head of the newly built cardiac centre of PIMS in the presence of senior most cardiologist Dr Iqbal Saifullah, which was bitterly criticised by the medical fraternity. In order to suppress the protest, the PIMS administration served show cause notices on nurses for their support for appointments on merit. A similar circular was issued by the Children Hospital administration asking consultants not to join the protest. Hwevr, the latter have joined this protest. Earlier, a meeting was also held in order to devise next strategy regarding the issue with Dean Prof Ghazala Mehmood in the chair, which was attended by the representatives of Doctors Academic Council and senior faculty members of PIMS. The meeting adopted a unanimous resolution and urged the government to immediately withdraw the appointment orders of Dr Naeen Tareen. On the occasion Prof Ghazala recommended daily strike from 1-2 pm. In the resolution the faculty and the Academic Council urged the government to remove Dr Naeem Tareen with immediate effect and appoint the deserving senior doctor of PIMS in his place. The Council has also asked the Ministry of Health to consult with the concerned institution and seek technical advise before making such appointment/s. The Council also opined that the illogical decision of the Ministry could also jeopardize working of this well reputed hospital. On the occasion, the aggrieved trainee doctors also vowed to continue protest till the fulfilment of its logical objectives that included the appointment of the Dr Iqbal Saifullah as head of the newly established Cardiac Centre and withdrawal of appointment orders of Dr Tareen. Meanwhile, addressing the protesters, Chairman Trainee Doctors and House Officers Association Dr Sajid said that the Cardiac Centre has recently been established in PIMS by personal efforts of Faculty members of Cardiology and Dr Tareen has never been a member of teaching faculty and he has never held any teaching position. Talking to the journalists, senior doctor of the hospital Prof Khaliq Zaman said that such appointment has resulted in frustration and disgrace amongst the senior faculty members, who are already performing the same duties efficiently. working on BPS scales in contrast to Dr Tareen who has been appointed on MP-1 scale. Dr Iqbal Saifullah while talking to TheNation said that despite resolving the issue, the Health Secretary is threatening them.
