OUR STAFF REPORTER LAHORE The Lahore Electricity Supply Company has totally failed to provide electricity to consumers and a major shutdown is being conducted in the morning and afternoon, the peak period of the deadly mosquitoes biting activity. Reportedly, the situation is not different in the other areas of the country as the national grid is facing more than 5,000MW shortfall and the fuel is not available to run the power plants. The City is under the grip of more than 10-hour load shedding and in some areas the LESCO has been conducting consecutive spells of three to four hours outages. The Companys grid stations located in underdeveloped and remote areas have been conducting more than 12 hours load shedding for its consumers, consumers from various areas told TheNation on phone. Half of the City was without electricity on Monday morning from 4 am to 6am. Similarly, the worst tripping and long spells continued on Monday evening especially in the areas of Batapur, Ghaziabad, Fateh Garh, Mughalpura, Daroghawala, Shahdrah, Mozang, Allama Iqbal Town and the areas under Johar Town Grid stations. The LESCO top management, majority of XENs, SDOs and the staff at complaint offices and grid stations were not bothering to clear the situations to the consumers who called them. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Electric Supply Company (PEPCO) has totally failed to provide electricity to the millions of consumers. The Power Ministry and PEPCOs failure to arrange fuel for the thermal units and to bound electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) for making an efficient load shedding schedule for the convenience of the consumers was the only reason behind the merciless and unscheduled load shedding hours. This is learnt that apart from severe fuel and gas shortage hampering power generation, PEPCOs failure to maintain its own thermal units causes a considerable portion over 50 per cent of the total shortfall. According to the companys sources, Jamshoro Thermal Plant, out of total 700MW capacity, has been producing less than 150MW. Similarly, GTPS Muzaffarghar and Guddu Power Plant have been producing mere 800MW while both have the capacity to produce more than 2,000MW. The IPPs on Sunday generated 5,205MW and the RPPs produced mere 144MW. It is worth mentioning here that the Karkay Power Ship (a Turkish Rental Power Unit) has only capacity to produce 260 MW. The hydel generation also decreased and it was standing at 5,995MW.
