Surprise, surprise. Vladimir Putin has announced he will run again in the Russian presidential election. The move opens the door for the prime minister and former holder of the presidency to lead Russia until 2024. As if there had ever been any doubt that Putin would not be running - not since he and his right-hand man, Dmitry Medvedev, the current President, began their tandem leadership of Russia. The reality is that the two have held the reins of power in Russia for close to two decades and their leadership has forged a growing economic power. Putins hand had been tied by the constraints of Russias term limits on the presidency. But the Putin-Medvedev duo works, and Putins term as Prime Minister served to at least show that Medvedev has the ability to lead in his own right. It just goes to show Russia isnt just a one-trick pony show. Gulf News editorial
