MOHALI - How cruel is Twenty20 cricket? That is what Jonathan Carter must be asking after seemingly having set up his team for their first win of the Champions League Twenty20 with a superb unbeaten century, only to find himself needing to bat a second time after the scores were levelled after 40 overs.

Having batted 17.4 overs for 111* off 68 balls, Carter failed to close out a Super Over chase of 12 against Cape Cobras, critically missing a full toss down the pads that resulted in two scampered runs to leave Barbados Tridents one run short of their target. While Carter sank to his knees and thumped the pitch with his bat, the delighted Cobras converged as one to celebrate their first win of the tournament. After two losses, the South African outfit got on board the points table but need to win their last match and also hope that other results go their way.

Chasing 175, Cobras were well placed at 99 for 1 in the 11th over before legspinner Jeewan Mendis pulled them back with 4 for 27. Three of those came in seven balls, with Mendis' dismissal of a well-set Hashim Amla triggering a collapse from which Cobras failed to recover, as Justin Kemp and Sybrand Engelbrecht scored 12 of the required 13 runs needed to win the match. A lovely yorker-filled Super Over from Ravi Rampaul left Tridents to score 12 from six balls, but Carter's miss of a loose delivery from Engelbrecht left Tridents stunned.

The result put in the shade Carter's maiden T20 hundred, which had formed the foundation for Tridents' total of 174 for 8, as well as a four-wicket haul from Mendis. In early trouble at 7 for 2 after the sloppy exits of Shane Dowrich and Raymon Refier inside there overs, Tridents were put back on track by Carter and Munaweera. The pair was far from pretty, but prospered in a partnership worth 75 in 52 balls. Carter heaved and scythed his way out of the Powerplay, from which Tridents made only 32, and found support from Munaweera who revved up with a couple lofted sixes.

The ninth over proved costly for Cobras, as Sybrand Englebrecht failed to clutch on to a miscued slog from Carter on 26, before Munaweera clouted two fours off Justin Kemp. Munaweera's plucky 42 off 21 balls ended widen he was run out by Engelbrecht from the deep. Carter, on 39 off 36 balls at the time, reached his half-century in four balls by going hard at Justing Ontong.

From his next 28 balls faced, Carter larruped 60 runs to drive Tridents to a strong total. He lacked support but repeatedly found the boundary to frustrate Cobras. Carter moved into the sixties, eighties and nineties with sixes, and his century came with a scampered single to midwicket. When he went aerial it was with purpose and power, as five sixes flew from his bat. It was a superb T20 innings, containing ten fours to go with that collection of attractive six-hitting.

Richard Levi drove Cobras' reply with a robust 18-ball 38, of which 26 came in five consecutive balls off Jason Holder, but it was Amla who had a bigger role to play.

Not a natural fit in T20, Amla clipped and cut his way to a 42-ball 59 that kept Cobras in sight of their target. Amla had three slices of luck during his fifty: before he'd opened his account he was dropped by Mendis at deep midwicket, on 51 he got a second reprieve when Hosein overstepped, and then on 59 Mendis put down a caught and bowled. That third chance did not cost Tridents because Amla fell next ball.

Needing 49 from 32 balls, the South Africans were jolted as Ontong and Dane Vilas slogged their way back to the Cobras' dugout in the same over. That left Kemp and Engelbrech with too much to do.
