ISLAMABAD  - President of World Bank Jim Yong Kim called on the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on the sidelines of the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Matters related to social and economic development of Pakistan came up for discussion.

The Prime Minister outlined efforts made by the government in pursuing reform agenda, building national economy, improving social indicators and enhancing regional connectivity. He appreciated Jim Yong Kim’s leadership in raising the level of World Bank’s contribution to development and growth in Pakistan to unprecedented levels. The Prime Minister specifically noted World Bank’s support to Dasu Power Project as an important milestone and welcomed World Bank’s participation in the forthcoming Business Opportunities Conference on Diamer Basha Dam. World Bank’s record disbursement of $ 1.7 billion in one year and approval of Country Partnership Strategy for Pakistan with portfolio of $ 11 billion over four years manifest the potential for development in Pakistan, the Prime Minister noted. Nawaz Sharif stated that the Government was resolutely focused on dealing with immediate challenges of providing relief to victims of recent floods, and rehabilitation of people displaced due to counter-terrorism operations in North Waziristan. The Prime Minter also informed President Kim of his personal commitment and involvement in leading the national effort to eradicate Polio from Pakistan.

Jim Yong Kim appreciated the steps taken by the government to strengthen and reform Pakistan’s economy including the measures taken to overcome the energy crises. He expressed interest in enhancing World Bank’s investments in projects vital for growth and prosperity of Pakistan and the region. Government’s plans for development in the health sector and improving disaster management were also discussed.
