KABUL (AFP) - US-led and Afghan troops killed five suspected militants during complex operations targeting rebels in southern Afghanistan on Monday, the force said. The rebels were shot dead as soldiers searched compounds in the province of Kandahar where troops found and protected 150 civilians, including 50 children, the US-led force said in a statement. The militants were killed after refusing orders to evacuate buildings in the Taliban flashpoint of Zhari district. The troops conducted a complex operation after receiving a tip on the location of Taliban operatives connected to bomb-making and other nefarious activities, the statement said. The US-led military also accused the militants of operating a checkpoint in Zhari to collect money from local citizens. Ten men with suspected links to the rebels were detained during the operation, the military said.
