PPP and PML-N set to hold APC

LAHORE-Top leaders of both PPP and PML (N) have decided to hold an All Parties Conference proposed recently by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to evolve consensus as how to go about from here in dealing with issues like national security and terrorism at the earliest. Major push to hold the APC came when both Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif met the other day in the City. It was in this meeting that both sides decided to hold the APC, the sources added. It is learnt that the APC will take up three main agenda items and will ponder over them during this mega event. The agenda item being finalised between the two parties included economy with reference to the countrys future priorities and issues of security and terrorism. The sources disclosed that Prime Minister would brief President Asif Ali Zardari about his meeting with PML (N) leader in which holding of APC figured quite prominently. After nod from President the ground-work for the APC will be started. The APC is expected soon after the return of President from his visit to the US. The APC will be attended by leaders of all political parties including regional and national parties. The main task before the political leadership during this event will be to draw up a national security policy unanimously in the face of internal and external threats. Meanwhile, the PML (N) leadership is not ready to join the PPP in the Federal govt despite fresh efforts from the influential quarters to restore coalition set up both in Centre and Punjab with PPP and PML (N) being major partners. However, both parties are expected to take final decisions within couple of days in this respect. The PPP will give its verdict on Tuesday (today) whether it is joining the PML (N) led Punjab govt especially in the wake of fresh offer from Shahbaz Sharif when its Parliamentary Party from the Punjab will gather at Islamabad for consultation under the leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari. PML (N) leadership has also called a similar meeting on March 30 to deliberate further whether it should join the Federal govt or not. However, knowledgeable sources revealed that the prospects of both sides coming together in Centre and Punjab are quite remote. It is learnt that both sides have already agreed to support each other while staying in the Opposition and without sharing power with each other. The sources disclosed that the leaders of both sides have agreed on three main principles. First, it is decided that no one will seek to destabilise the other side in the future. Second, both parties will continue lending support to each other, including the Parliamentary support/vote where-ever required. Third, the PML (N) assured the PPP leadership that it will allow the PPP govt in the Centre to have its full term and as such it will never support any move for mid-term polls. This promise must be heartening for the PPP leadership earlier convinced that Nawaz Sharif wants to pack up the system to pave way for the mid-term elections. Both parties also promised to take each other on board on important developments and issues.
