I was flabbergasted to see Maulana Abdul Aziz, the man behind the Lal Masjid fiasco, being released from custody on bail and taking the helm at Lal Masjid again. What was even more disheartening was that the Supreme Court bench that granted him bail was led by Justice Javed Iqbal, one of the 'independent' judges recently restored. Rather than holding the Maulana accountable for challenging writ of the state with impunity, the judiciary has greatly disappointed those who were looking forward to a new era of justice by taking a so-called 'popular', rather than right decision. -ZEESHAAN HASHMI, Lahore, via e-mail, April 16.
