ISLAMABAD (APP) - Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira Tuesday said the report of the criminal investigation into Shaheed Benazir Bhuttos assassination would be ready by next month He also promised to bring to justice the persons identified in the report. Talking to senior journalists and television anchorpersons at PTV headquarters, he said, Whosoever is found involved in killing of Mohtarma would be punished under law no matter where he is residing. Kaira said the PPP-led coalition government did not believe in politics of victimisation but it would not spare the criminals who deprived the people of Pakistan of such a great leader. To a question about former president Pervez Musharraf, he said in Pakistan and all over the world, formers presidents did not enjoy amnesty. The minister said Prime Minister Gilani had constituted a committee to unearth the person who ordered hosing down the venue of the Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto assassination, adding that the team had been authorised to call any person for questioning during the course of investigations and any individual not cooperating would be punished in accordance with the law. Praising Shaheed Benazir, he said she was a leader of international stature who would always remain alive in peoples hearts. Martyrdom of Benazir Bhutto is not only the loss for Pakistan but for the whole world, he added. Kaira said a Benazir was not provided proper security cover by the then government and the officials concerned in Rawalpindi where she was martyred in 2007. He said following the attempt on her life in Karachi, on the day of her arrival, Pakistan Peoples Party had been demanding the government to ensure stringent security cover for lat leader. Responding to a question, Kaira said, Political workers are not trained in security matters, therefore, they cannot be blamed in this regard. He said it was the political workers who sacrificed their lives to save her life in the assassination attempt in Karachi. To another question, Kaira said it was political wisdom of PPP leadership that compelled Musharraf to doff his uniform. Later, through political negotiations, the party ousted him from the presidency as well without shedding any blood, he added. He said the PPP govt had always promoted politics of reconciliation for the cause of democracy, adding that the announcement of NFC Award and unanimous passage of 18th Amendment were the fruits of promotion of democratic culture in the country. Replying to a question, Kaira said several steps had been taken to ensure public access to information. About the strategy to overcome power crisis, he said the government had introduced plan for conservation of electricity. He dispelled the perception that energy was available, but the government was unable to manage it. We cannot afford instability in the country, the minister added. The government is utilizing all possible resource to generate electricity, he said. He also rejected the impression that Iran was ready to provide free of cost electricity to Pakistan, but the government was reluctant to purchase it, by saying that the project would take four and a half years for completion by erecting a 400 km transmission line from Zahidan. He further said import of electricity from China was more difficult as installation of transmission lines in the mountainous region would not only be difficult and time consuming but also very costly. He expressed the hope that energy situation would improve within a couple of days due to measures announced by the govt. To a question the minister said the aim of the meeting was to invite senior journalists to take their input on various issues. and also share information with the media. The basic aim of this meeting was to take guidance from the media persons that how can government improve the information-sharing techniques with them, he said. We see media criticism as an important component of our accountability process, Kaira said, adding, It is important for every democratic government that puts premium on good governance to take advantage of medias role as a watchdog. Kaira said the government was working to facilitate media growth, enabling it to fulfil responsibilities in an effective manner.
