ISLAMABAD Taking strict notice of financial wrongdoings of Rs 470 million in Pakistan Railways (PR), Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Tuesday ordered to conduct special audit in this regard. The PAC met under its Vice Chairman Yasmin Rehman and reviewed the audit report of Railways for the fiscal year 2007-08. Spotlighting the financial irregularity, the Committee spotlighted Rs 470 million irregularities pointed out by the audit in purchase of 699 coaches by Railways. According to the audit report, Railways authorities paid for 50 AC units without issuing any tender that caused a loss to the tune of Rs 30 million to Railways. On this, PAC has given 15 days time period to the Chairman Railways for conducting detailed probe for fixing responsibility. The meeting was also informed that the special marriage train launched during the previous era had been named tourists train. The Chairman Railways told the Committee that 25 percent share of overall cargo business would be enhanced. Following the previous meeting orders, it was told that Secretary Railways Board Imtiaz Khan had been removed from his office. Discussing the loss to Railways, the DG FIA said that Railway officers in connivance with Railways Police officers sold 5,000 metric tone scrap without bidding and it caused a loss of Rs 195 million. He further said that enquiry had been finalised and waiting for a indication to file FIR against the officers involved in the mess. Earlier, the PAC asked the Chairman Railways to make strategy with respect to recovery of stolen goods and submit report to the Committee within 10 days. The IG Railway Police informed the Committee that during the five year (2004 to 2009) around 95 percent stolen material was recovered.
