ISLAMABAD Criticising Awami National Party-led government for mishandling the uproar in Hazara Division over the renaming of NWFP as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, President of his own faction of Pakistan Peoples Party, Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao said concrete steps should be taken for the appeasement of people of Hazara, as this issue would continue to haunt the provincial government and would not die down easily. Talking to TheNation here on Tuesday Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao said that his party had written dissenting note on the renaming of the province and it wanted to settle the issue through consensus. To a question, he said that it was too early to say something about the formation of Hazara province and stressed the need of engaging the people of Hazara Division into serious dialogue and they should be made felt that the government in Peshawar was with them and really wanted to address their genuine concerns. He said that the provincial government should take immediate measures to rope in enraged people of Hazara and as a first step the members of provincial assembly from this belt should be given freehand in the development of their area and they should be made master of their destiny. He said that in this way the fuming sentiments of the people would cool down and they would feel ownership to the government sitting in Peshawar otherwise the movement for separate province would gain strength. He said that ANP government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was doing nothing for the development of the backward and far-flung areas of the province and that was the reason that after Hazara the Malakand people had also raised the voice for a separate province. He said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government should apologise for the killing of the people in riots in Abbottabad and the families of all those, who had lost their dear ones and those who were injured during the agitation, should be duly compensated. He further said that the mainstream political parties like Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Pakistan Peoples Party and Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid should come forward and play their role in diluting the volatile situation in the area and help calm down the public sentiment. He said that MQM was among the forerunners in supporting the demand of Hazara province, as in this way it would be levelling ground for their longstanding demand of separate province comprising port city of Karachi and Hyderabad. About his views on the separate province for the people of Hazara, Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao said that it was too early to comment on it but his party wanted appeasement of people of Hazara and for that matter his party would use its influence in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.
