Police believe accused girl innocent



ISLAMABAD - While higher governmental authorities assured representatives of minorities on Monday to conduct free and fair investigation into the 12-year-old Christian girl (accused of blasphemy), police officials believe she did not burn pages of Holy Quran.
“I’m sure the little girl did not burn pages of Holly Quran. At a time when arrested, she was holding a shopper containing some burnt stuff from an Arabic language book,” a police official, who was among those policemen who had arrested the girl from place of the incident last week, told TheNation on Monday.
“We grilled the girl at police station and concluded she did not know about the nature of the burnt pages,” the police official who spoke only on condition of anonymity. According to reports, no one from ‘Jaffar Abad’ has claimed to become witness the Christian girl burning the pages of Holy Quran.
While the one who had reported the incident to police refused to talk to this reporter about the incident.
On Monday, Maulana Tahir Ashrafi, while talking to this scribe, demanded free and fair investigation to ascertain if the accused girl deliberately burnt the pages.
“We believe in fair investigation to sort out issue. Also authorities need to determine mental status of the accused,” Ashrafi maintained.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Interior Ministry has recently launched a thorough probe into the incident following directives of President Asif Ali Zardari in this regard.
