HAFIZABAD - Scores of SNGPL employees Monday went on strike against the alleged manhandling of a clerk y former MNA's son Ch Shafaqat Ali Bhatti.

According to clerk Muhammad Bilal, Ch Shafaqat visited his office for the replacement of Sui gas meter of one of his supporter Muhammad Nawaz's residence. Shafaqat was informed that the required service could not be provided as there is no meter available in the office. He was also assured that the meter would be replaced as soon as the new stock was available. But Shafaqat Bhatti misbehaved and even physically tortured the employee.

Thereupon, all the staff stopped working and went on strike. The staff union strongly condemned the incident and demanded a legal action against the accused. When contacted, Shafaqat denied the allegations and said the clerk is used to harass the complainants and habitual of not entertaining the aggrieved consumers.

Meanwhile, Commissioner Gujranwala Division Abdul Jabbar Shaheen has directed the Irrigation Department officers to take prompt and stringent measures, providing relief goods to the villagers whose houses were washed away on Friday due to erosion near the Qadirabad Barrage. The Commissioner along with DCO M Asif and other officers concerned visited Burj Bhian and assured the villagers of all possible help and financial assistance for their rehabilitation. He directed the authorities concerned to provide the villagers better shelter, food and medical assistance. Earlier, the DCO briefed him about the relief efforts being carried out for the villagers and their livestock.

Meanwhile, sports competitions have been started under the Punjab Youth Festival in 330 villages across the district. The DCO, in a meeting with official concerned, apprised them of their responsibilities.

District Sports Officer Nasir Chaudhry told the DCO that competitions in badminton, tape-ball cricket, wrestling, volley ball etc. have been started.

Tehsil Sports Officer Pindi Bhattian Nabeela Cheema told the DCO competitions in "Qira'at and Nat Khawani" in Pindi Bhattian Tehsil have been completed while the competitions in other games and athletics will start soon.
