Govt proposes targeted operation in Karachi: Ch Nisar

Interior Minister, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has said that there is no need for whole scale operation in Karachi as the city can get rid of identified miscreants in a non-political and transparent targeted operation.
Interior Minister mentioned that the government has proposed a targeted operation in the economic hub of Pakistan against identified target killers‚ extortionists and criminals.
Addressing a press conference Wednesday here, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan disclosed that extortionists and target killers had been identified in Karachi and unfortunately most of them have political affiliations.
“Political will, clarity of thought and transparency is required to improve the situation,” Nisar mentioned.
He added that during the next cabinet meeting proposal for a targeted operation in the city would be put forward and Chief Minister Sindh would be asked to head it.
“We will recommend Chief Minister Sindh to be the team captain of this operation. We need to have clear parameters. If a criminal with political affiliation is caught there should be no interference.”
The Minister mentioned that federal cabinet would discuss the details of the operations and final decision would be taken after consultation with CM Sindh and Governor Sindh, adding heads of intelligence and law enforcing agencies would be invited to the Cabinet meeting.
Referring to the Muttahidda Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) demand for the army to be given control of Karachi, Nisar said that he agreed with their stance that something needed to be done.
Interior minister added that DG Rangers had informed him of the willingness to carry out an operation in Karachi.
“Chief Minister Sindh will have to lead the operation and Rangers will be at his disposal,” he said.
Nisar claimed that situation in Karachi would definitely change after the operation, adding Karachi situation was worsening day by day and urgent action was needed.
“Peace cannot be restored in Karachi by issuing political statements or by giving briefings, it requires political will and consensus,” minister predicted.
Chaudhry Nisar said a committee consisting of representatives of major political parties having presence in Karachi and known media and business figures is proposed to be formed to oversee the operation so that no one could raise an accusing finger towards transparency and fairness of the operation.
He categorically stated that at the moment no decision about operation in Karachi has been taken and any progress depends on the outcome of the cabinet meeting on Karachi.
Interior Minister said action would be taken by civil armed forces and police against those elements against whom evidence is available and once action is initiated no one would be spared irrespective of his political affiliation.
