LAHORE - Pakistan Awami Tehreek has implored Prime Minister Imran Khan not to appoint Major (r) Azam Sulaiman as Chief Secretary Punjab, who, according to reports, was most favorite candidate for the said post.

 In a letter addressed to PM, PAT General Secretary Khurram Nawaz Gandapur said that Azam was Home Secretary Punjab when Model Town incident took place. He was, according to him, one of 12 accused of Model Town case against whom victim families of incident has approached Lahore High Court. He said Azam was directly responsible for illegal act of not issuing Justice Baqar Najfi Commission report. “Azam was right hand of Mian Shahbaz Sharif. He represented former Chief Minister Punjab in a meeting held at Civil Secretariat Lahore on 16 June 2014 regarding illegal Model Town operation,” said Gandapur, adding the meeting was presided over by Rana Sana Ullah.  In the meeting, he claimed, attacks on Idara Minhaj-Ul-Quran, Dr. Tahir-ul-Qadri’s residence and massacre were planned and this position of PAT was verified in Justice Baqar Najfi report. Therefore, read the letter, it was request unless and until Major (r) Azam Sulaiman should not be appointed on responsible post unless he proved innocent in the court.

His appointment, the letter read, would prove hurdle in fair investigation and trial of the Model Town case.
