LAHORE Youme Ashur, the 10th of Muharram is being observed with religious devotion on Monday (today) in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir to commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS), his 72 family members and companions at Karbala for upholding the glorious norms of Islam namely justice, truth, righteousness and piety. Monday will be a public holiday, and all government offices and all other organisations including educational institutions, banks and commercial centres will remain closed. TV and radio channels will air special programmes to mark the occasion while newspapers will publish special supplements on the supreme sacrifices rendered by the grand son of Holy Prophet (PBUH) while fighting against the forces of oppression. People from all walks of life will observe the day and hold commemorative meetings in their respective traditions. They will also organise Aza meetings and special commemorative conferences to pay homage to the great Imam (AS) and to highlight the significance of the Day. Eminent ulema and zakris will spotlight the tragedy of Karbala, followed by Zuljannah processions which will follow their traditional routes in all cities and towns. Thousands of mourners will participate in the processions and perform mourning rituals with iron chains and by beating their chests and reciting 'nohas. Eminent political and community leaders, as well as ulema will accompany the processions. Heavy contingent of police and security forces will also accompany the processions to check any untoward incident. Extraordinary arrangements have been made to combat the threats of terrorism. In Lahore, the central zuljannah procession was taken out from Nisar Haveli, inside Mochi gate around 10 pm on Saturday. Earlier, a majlis-e-Aza was held at Nisar Haveli which was addressed by Allama Asad Johari and Shujr Hussain Shujr and attended by thousands of mourners. Leading Shia and Sunni leaders were present on the occasion. The procession marched on its traditional route in Mohallah Shian inside Mochi gate and went round 100 Imambargahs in the vicinity during the night. It was heading towards Karbala Gamey Shah, its destination where it will terminate after sunset on Monday (today). The procession will take a pause at chowk Nawab Sahib, inside Mochi gate where the mourners will offer fajr prayers and regroup after the prayers to set on their route. Here they will start beating their backs and chests with iron chains profusely. A number of small zuljannah processions also joined the main procession which would march onward after emerging again from chowk Nawab Sahib through Lakr Mandi, Chohatta Mufti Baqar, Old Kotwali, Kashmiri bazaar, Rang Mahal. At Rang Mahal, the mourners would halt for zohr prayers and later proceed toward soha bazaar, Gumti bazaar, Paniwala talab, tehsil bazaar, bazaar Hakeeman, Dehli gate, Bhatti chowk and finally to converge at Karbala Gamay Shah at Lower Mall Road. A number of NGOs, voluntary welfare organisations and people at large have set up dispensaries, first aid posts, stalls of food and eatables. ISO, Anjuman Hussainia, Red Crescent and City District Government fire brigade and sanitation staff have been put on alert to perform their respective duties. The Ittehad Bainul Muslimeen cell, set up at Auqaf department was also monitoring the Muharram activities.
