LAHORE - A 32-year-old alleged robber, who was gunned down in what Islampura Police claimed an encounter late on Sunday night has been identified as Azam on Monday. Senior police officers, however, maintained the deceased was wanted to Islampura and Lower Mall Police in nine different cases of dacoity, robbery, mobile-snatching, vehicles theft and street crimes. The police said that late on Sunday night, one robber Azam along with his accomplice Muhammad Riaz snatched a motorcycle (LEQ-9086) from a citizen. Sources in police concerned said these robbers snatched a bike from Sanda Police Area and snatched another bike (125cc) from another citizen. They further said the robbers after snatching bike from Sanda Area reached Sagian Bridge where they tried to snatch valuables including cash, jewelry and mobile phones from Ghulam Nasir and his family on gun point. Ghulam Nasir offered resistance and captured Azam over which Muhammad Riaz got infuriated and opened indiscriminate firings on Ghulam Nasir who suffered serious bullet injuries, besides badly damaging his car. Meanwhile, two personnel of Mufahiz Squad namely Muhammad Qaisar and Ahmed reached the scene. Seeing the police personnel, the accused reportedly, opened fires on them, who retaliated in the same way as a result of which Azam suffered multiple bullet injuries. The Squad personnel also managed to arrest his accomplice Muhammad Riaz along with illegal sophisticated weapons. Senior police officers of the City Police Division also reached the scene and rushed Azam to the Mayo Hospital where the doctors pronounced him dead. Later, police removed the body to the City morgue for autopsy and started investigating the matter. Islampura Police after registering a case on the complaint of Ghulam Nasir, handed over Muhammad Riaz to investigation police for further interrogations. According to Police sources, the deceased was also involved in different nine cases of dacoity, robbery and street crimes. Meanwhile in another alleged encounter on Monday in the Iqbal Town Police precincts, Gulshane Iqbal Police held a robber while his two accomplices managed to escape from the scene. The arrested accused was identified as Faizan Zulifqar, a resident of Sabzazar Area. The police investigators said that Faizan along with his two accomplices forced his entry in the house of one Shaheen Bibi, a resident of Kareem Block, Iqbal Town. Robbers after entering the house held all the inmates on gun point and were trying to escape after collecting valuables including cash, jewelry and mobile phones worth thousands of rupees from the house when inmates raised alarms, police sources said. In the meantime, locals and police officials immediately reached the scene and arrested Faizan while his accomplices managed to escape along with looted items while firing in the air. A case has been registered with the police station concerned. The investigations are underway.
