Tackling energy crisis

President Asif Ali Zardari has in an impassioned address at the P.I.A. employees reinstatement ceremony at Karachi has again stressed upon his slogan of Pakistan Khappay. Despite his impressive rhetoric about improving the conditions of poor masses in the fanfare of Jeea Bhutto slogan there are ground realities that nullify the resolve of betterment of life of poor masses. The extending hours of power and gas loadshedding, escalating prices of gas and petrol as also public exposure of massive scams involving billions of rupees and hefty foreign accounts of rulers compounded by dynastic aspirations for their wards to inherit levers of power in government do not augur well for the ambitious claims of sustaining Pakistan by vociferous declarations of Pakistan Khappay. What is required in the first instance is to build Kalabagh dam in the next seven years to deliver two billion U.S. worth of crops and electricity yearly to rid Pakistan of vicious cycle of IMF loans that would hang like a millstone around the neck of Pakistan to doom it for future generations in historical perspective.
