Sports are the best expression and identification of a nation. For instance, talk about Australia and the first thing that comes to mind is the country being the world champions in cricket. Football and Brazil are always spoken in the same breath. There was a time when Pakistan was among the countries that produced world class super stars in sports, be it hockey, cricket or squash. Unfortunately, the scenario has totally changed today. Talk about hockey and we had a number of stars in the past that ruled the world hockey. Having superstars like Shahbaz, Sohail Abbas etc till recently, Pakistani team was considered the most competitive in the international hockey. We had won many titles like the Champions Trophy and the World Cup. The present, though, is nothing to write home about so much so that we are ashamed of calling hockey our national game. Similarly, we had heroes like Imran Khan, Javed Miandad, Waseem Akram and Inzimamul Haq in cricket until the present phase when we have none. After Jehangir and Jansher Khan, we have nothing but a severe drought in squash. -USAMA RASHEED, Karachi, via e-mail, February 24.
