The PPP election manifesto, which is still available on its website, loudly proclaims the intent to serve the Pakistanis working abroad. But the veracity of this claim can be judged by the fact that after coming into power, it immediately increased the surcharge on foreign telecommunication companies that connect Pakistanis working abroad with their families in Pakistan. While call rates from countries like UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait etc to India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka were decreasing, calling cards units per card on calls to Pakistan were decreased thereby increasing rates. Now the rates for calls from overseas to Pakistan were increased with the imposition of a surcharge on telecom companies of foreign origin. -ZAIDE, Dubai, via e-mail, February 13.
