FAISALABAD - One out of five deaths is caused by cardiac arrest which can be prevented by adopting good lifestyle, balanced diet and creating awareness among the masses.

This was stated renowned cardiologist Dr Naeem Aslam while addressing a seminar titled “Healthy Heart, Healthy Life” organised by Public Relations & Publications Department and Senior Tutor Office, University of Agriculture Faisalabad the other day. UAF Vice Chancellor Dr Iqrar Ahmad presided over the seminar while PRP Principal Officer Dr Muhamamd Jalal Arif, Senior Tutor Dr Aslam Pervez, ORIC Director Dr Rao Asif and Assistant Registrar Syed Qamar Bukhari also spoke on the occasion.  FIC Senior Registrar Dr Shahid was also present on the occasion.  Dr Naeem Aslam said that smoking, bad eating habits such as junk food, obesity, lack of physical activities, hypertension and diabetics were the main reasons that were multiplying the risk factor of heart attack. He said that according to the World Health Organisation, as many as 16.6 million people die of cardiac arrest per annum.

He expressed his apprehension that by the year 2020, heart attacks would be the leading cause of deaths. He called for using fresh vegetables and fruits to remain healthy. Junky food and fast food should be avoided, he stressed.  He stressed the need for avoiding smoking as one cigarette reduced the lifespan of five minutes. He said that smoking was responsible for 19 percent of the total deaths.  Dr Naeem Aslam pointed out that 18 percent of Pakistani population was suffering from blood pressure. He continued that hypertension doubles the risk of cardiac attack so it should be avoided by ensuring exercise in routine life. He highlighted that risk factor in women was more than men.

UAF VC Dr Iqrar stressed the need for creating awareness among the masses about the diseases in to check it. He said that use of balanced diet was the way to prevention and that must be promoted in society. He also called for making all-out efforts to educate the masses about the issue.  In his speech Dr Jalal Arif said that in America, 0.6 million die of heart attack per annum whereas the disease was taking the life of a person after every seven minutes in UK. He also called for stepping up efforts in this regard.  Prof Dr Aslam Pervez thanked the key speaker and the audience for attending the event.
