Speakers call for speedy efforts to fight dengue

FAISALABAD - A seminar on dengue was held at University of Agriculture Faisalabad under the arrangements of the Department of Entomology here the other day.
The seminar was presided over by UAF Vice Chancellor Dr Iqrar Ahmad.
The department also arranged a dengue awareness walk which was started from Old Senate Hall and concluded at Admin Block. The initiatives were part of the Punjab Chief Minister campaign for educating the masses about dengue prevention and its elimination.
Agriculture Faculty Dean Dr Muhamamd Arshad, Department of Entomology Chairman Dr Muhammad Jalal Arif, Dr Anjum Sohail and Dr Rasheed Ahmad Khan also addressed the seminar.
Addressing the seminar, Dr Iqrar Ahmad praised the steps being taken on the part of the Punjab government as it was controlled within a short span of time whereas other countries took years to curb the disease.
He said that misconception regarding dengue prevailed in the society that needs to be eliminated through proper awareness among people.
He urged the students to keep home, environment and surrounding hygiene; remove all stagnant water and containers; avoid accumulation of ground water; fill up all defective grounds and don’t store water.
He said that 12 research projects on the disease had been initiated by setting up Dengue Group at the campus to combat the havoc.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Arshad called for wrapping all unused plastic tyres, regularly change water in animal drinking containers and use mosquito repellents to avoid mosquito bite.
Dr Muhammad Jalal Arif said that swelling on face, hands and feet, or bleeding from any part of the body were signs of the infection getting serious.
Dr Anjum Sohail dispelling the concept that dengue comes over fresh water and said that if water was held in a pot for one day, dengue would not lay eggs as it likes stagnant water which was mixed with some dust participles.
