LAHORE - The United Nations, Association of Network for Community Empowerment (ANCE), International Labour Organisation (ILO) and Punjab University jointly organised a workshop to empower brick kiln workers” at PU College of Art and Design on Wednesday.

ILO Pakistan Country Director Mr Francesco d’Ovido, Punjab Secretary Literacy Dr Pervaiz Ahmed Khan, DG Social Security Anfal Ahmed, NGO ANCE president Raja Abbas Ali, PUCAD Principal Prof Dr Rahat Naveed Masud, Rana Sheer Khan Babur from NADRA, ANCE President Raja Abbas, Prof Dr Anis A Siddiqui addressed on this occasion. A large number of brick-klin workers, whose artwork was displayed and who are are beneficiary of ILO-ANCE Literacy Project were also present on this occasion. Addressing the ceremony ILO Pakistan Country Director Mr Francesco d’Ovido said that ILO was supporting social justice and improving working condition in the world as well as in Pakistan. Talking to Brick-Klin owners and workers, he said time has come to end the practice of bounded labour for the healthy growth of society. He told the parents of brick-klin worker children, that they were doing wonderful job but they they have compromised on the education of their children. “You must take decision for the education of your children,” he told them through his Urdu language interpreter. He said ILO has also workers for the welfare of brick-klin workers in collaboration with Association of Network for Community Empowerment (ANCE) and Pakistan Employees Social Security Institution.

ILO senior manager programs Dr Muhammad Saifullah said that ILO and PU provided an opportunity to the children of brick-klin workers to reach out other members of society and express their feeling through paintings, sculpture, greeting gards, hand bags and other artworks.
