ISLAMABAD - The mechanical excavation cum controlled blasting will further lower the level of Attaabad Lake by 30-meter till the end of May 2011, which will helpful in retrieving 15-km of submerged Karaka-rum Highway. This controlled blasting will also reduce the cost of rehabilitation/reconstruction work of the KKH. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) was monitoring this calamity since its inception and had worked incessantly, in coordination with all the stakeholders and line departments, to resolve the crisis by dewatering the lake and normalising life in the adjoining areas, said a press release issued by the NDMA. The NDMA, on the recommendations of US, Chinese and NESPAK experts coordinated and executed the plan to reopen the spillway on Jan 26.
