Pakistan build huge lead in tour match

LAHORE - Pakistan built a huge lead of 312 runs over South Africa Invitation XI with five wickets still intact at the end of the third day’s play on Sunday of the four-day match between the two sides. Pakistan were 240-5 in their second innings in 78 overs with captain Misbah-ul-Haq (51) and Sarfraz Ahmed (19) on the crease.
The tourists earned a 72 runs first innings lead over the Invitation XI with a superb bowling display. Invitation XI resumed their innings on 213-7 and were bundled out for 257 in 76.5 overs. Junaid Khan and Saeed Ajmal took three wickets each while Umar Gul clinched two and Irfan one. D Villas remained unbeaten on 62.
In their second innings, Pakistan’s in-form opening pair of M Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed provided the team again a brilliant start with a 142 runs stand. S van Zyl broke the opening partnership when Hafeez was caught behind after scoring 83 runs off 109 balls laced with 13 fours and a six. In the very next over, Jamshed was clean bowled by K Abbott after hitting 51 runs on 122 balls. He hit five boundaries during his patient innings Pakistan were 142-2 at tea. After the break, the middle order batting line-up again proved fragile as Azhar Ali (3), Younus Khan (14) and Asad Shafiq (11) flopped second consecutive time in the tour game. However, Misbah found some form and scored a patient half century with his trademark slow and cool manner on 123 balls including five boundaries and two sixes. Abbott (1-21), S Harmer (1-112), W Parnell (1-35), S van Zyl (1-16) and V van Jaarsveld (1-17) were the wicket takers for Invitation XI.
