LAHORE Federal government is not willing to restore the former Additional Director General (ADG) FIA Zafar Ahmad Qureshi to his office fearing that after taking charge he would summon the female members of Warraich family whose names were in the FIR as beneficiaries of NICL scam. Wife of Mohsin Habib Warraich was named in the FIR as co-accused alongwith her husband, two sisters-in-law, mother-in-law and father-in-law Major (Retd) Habibullah Warraich. There were allegations that money taken from NICL was transferred to their accounts by Mohsin Warraich. Warraich had flown to the UK from Dubai in the past but his red warrants were issued by the FIA for his arrest and subsequently handed over to Pakistan. Director FIA Zafar Qureshi had recovered over Rs 2b from the Warraich family since being appointed Investigation Officer in the case. A sum of Rs1.4b was repaid out of a total of Rs1.6 billion by the family, while bank cheques worth Rs 280m were submitted to FIA. In the second land deal, in which Rs 1.2b were paid by the NICL to Mohsin Warraich. A total of about Rs 2b were recovered by Zafar Qureshi. Sources claimed that Rs 420 million were yet to be recovered from Warraich family for which Zafar Qureshi could issue notices to the female members of Warraich family and Federal government was defending its former PPP Federal Minister at any cost. Another reason for the efforts of govt not to let Zafar Qureshi to be restored was that the restoration would be equal to have a split in PPP-led coalition govt as in the case PML-Q will not remain part of the government further. The multi-billion-rupee NICL corruption scandal also involved Moonis Elahi, the son of senior PML-Q leader and former Chief Minister Punjab, Chaudhry Pervez Elahi. 'The bureaucracy has been entangled between two institutions of the State at this time, sources added. In addition to that, some high-level officers in the Ministry of Interior are of the strong opinion that Supreme Court by reserving an order on the suspension issue of Chief Investigative Officer in NICL scam, Zafar Qureshi, the other day, has given the government more time to restore Zafar Qureshi while taking a lenient view. 'However, the Federal govt will not restore him and keep him toothless till September 30th, the day he reaches the age of superannuation, they added.
