ISLAMABAD - A full court meeting reiterated that the apex court would preserve and defend constitution and it would always uphold the rule of law and dispence justice to all without fear and favour. The full court that was held under the chairmanship of Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry at the Supreme Court, Islamabad, on Wednesday observed that the national salvation lies in applying the principle of rule of law and resisting any deviation from constitution under any circumstances. The chief justice said since the restoration of independent judiciary, public at large had great expectations from the judiciary to deliver. Thus, it was imperative upon both the bar and the bench to leave no stone unturned to ensure quick, inexpensive and substantial justice at all levels, he added. The full court discussed the idea of introducing law clerkship in the Supreme Court wherein young and outstanding law graduates may be offered an opportunity to work in the court. It was decided that Justice Jawwad S Khawaja would develop the concept paper on this idea which would be shared with other judges before final decision is taken in the next meeting. The Chief Justice and judges of the Supreme Court acknowledged the meritorious services rendered by Justice Javed Iqbal who is about to lay down his robes by the end of this month. The meeting took stock of the present pendency of cases at the apex court. The registrar informed that disposal of cases had registered remarkable increase due to continuous working of judges even during the summer vacations. The chief justice appreciated the commitment and devotion of all the judges for sitting in various benches both at the principle seat and the branch registries. He appreciated the efforts through which the backlog of pending cases had been reduced by more than two thousand. This figure would have been much higher had the judges not been busy in hearing many important cases which were heard by the full court or larger benches over a long period of time.
