KARACHI - The journalist community, members of civil society and different political leaders on Friday strongly condemned the killing of senior reporter of The Nation and Waqt TV Channel, Raja Assad Hameed, and demanded arrest of culprits involved in the incident. Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Karachi Press Club (KPC) to denounce the brutal incident. The protestors were carrying placards and banners, inscribed with slogans 'stop killing of journalists' and 'stop economic assassination of journalists'. Members of different journalists' associations, including Association of TV Journalists, Crime Reporters' Association, KPC and Karachi Union of Journalists, participated in the protest. They chanted slogans against the hidden elements working to curb Press freedom in the country. It may be recalled here that some unidentified culprits had gunned down senior reporter of The Nation and Waqt TV Channel, Raja Assad Hameed, on Thursday night at his residence located in the jurisdiction of Sadiqabad Police Station. Addressing the protest demonstration, Resident Editor Nawa-e-Waqt Karachi, Saeed Khawar, said that criminals had killed three journalists during the last months. He said a sharp rise in the brutal murders of journalists in Pakistan spoke volumes about the status of the so-called Press freedom in the country. Speaking on the occasion, General Secretary KPC, A H Khanzada, said working journalists in the country were falling an easy prey to the worst and further deteriorating law and order situation. Besides, they are also receiving threats from hidden elements in different parts of the country, he added. Khanzada also condemned the 'financial killing' of journalists and said that the unity among the members of the print and electronic media was the need of the hour in order to foil all conspiracies against this community. Several senior journalists, including Anisuddin Khan, Zamir Sheikh, Salik Majeed, Yousuf Khan, Idrees Bakhtiyar, Habib Khan Ghouri and other were present on the occasion. Members of civil society, senior lawyers and politicians also participated in the demonstration and addressed the protesters. They included MPAs Younus Barai and Tahir Qureshi, general secretary Karachi Bar Association Naeem Qureshi, information secretary PML-N Zahid Qureshi and ANP leader Amin Khatak. They expressed their heartfelt grief over the brutal killing of Raja Assad and expressed solidarity with journalist community. They demanded the government to arrest the culprits and bring them to justice.
