Seven Oceans

By Ashraf Naushahi

Oceanography is the science of oceans. It is the study of water waves, air currents, geology and ecology of the ocean. According to oceanography, there are seven oceans on the planet Earth, which are seven parts of the same ocean known as the World Ocean. Names of these seven oceans are: North Atlantic Ocean, South Atlantic Ocean, North Pacific Ocean, South Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean and Arctic Ocean.

When north and south parts of Atlantic and Pacific Oceans are not counted as separate oceans, these seven oceans are said to be five oceans as: Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Arctic Ocean and Southern Ocean. The Pacific is the largest ocean which is spread between the continents of Asia, Americas and Australia. Where its waters are shallow, petroleum, natural gas, pearls are obtained.

The second largest ocean is the Atlantic Ocean. Its waters are spread between the continents of Europe, Americas and Africa. Various routes of transportation and communication pass through the Atlantic Ocean. It is also a source of getting precious stones, and minerals as gold.

The third largest ocean is the Indian Ocean, spreading between the continents of Africa, Asian and Australia. Transport routes between various parts of Asia, Europe, Americas, Africa and Australia pass through it. Petroleum and minerals are also obtained from its

waters. The Southern Ocean is the ocean surrounding the continent of Antarctica. Its

parts are covered by sea-ice.

The World Ocean, having these seven oceans as its parts, is spread over 70 percent surface area of the Earth. Its waters are then divided in various small seas, bays and gulfs around the world..
