English language is most widely read, written and comprehended language but Chinese-Mandarin is the most spoken language in the present day world. Besides English and Chinese-Mandarin there are many other languages spoken in various parts of the world. All human languages are equally important for better human communication and understanding.

There are almost seven thousands (7,000) languages spoken in the world today. Some languages

have various dialects, and when dialects are defined as separate languages, there can be even

more languages. Most languages are the languages of small regions in the world. But a few

languages function as world languages because these languages are comprehended more or less

in diverse parts of the world. For instance, English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and

Italian languages are comprehended in various world regions where numerous native languages

are also spoken.

In the 21st century, ten most spoken languages (keeping in view how many native speakers speak their language) are: Chinese-Mandarin, Spanish, English, Portuguese, Arabic, Hindi, Bengali, Russian, Japanese, Javanese. French, German, Turkish, Persian, Punjabi, Polish, Italian, Urdu, Greek, Gujarati, Nepali, Malay, Swahili, and Tamil, are some other languages spoken in diverse parts of the world.

As a different language or dialect is spoken in every region around the globe, different people

estimate differently the total number of languages. It is not easy to know when, how and where

humans started to speak a language. Therefore, there are various and different theories about the

beginning of human language. Linguistics is the science that studies human language. Many

prominent thinkers, philosophers, writers, scientists and linguists have worked on human

languages during the ancient and modern times. Plato, Immanuel Kant, Jean-Jacques

Rousseau, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Ferdinand de Saussure, William Jones, Willard Van Orman

Quine, John Langshaw Austin, Herbert Paul Grice, Noam Chomsky, and many other linguists

are famous for their linguistic literary works.

In linguistics, a human language is usually studied as a system of communication and

understanding. Various human languages are basically used for verbal expressions and

understanding each other's point of view, in diverse cultures and societies.

A language makes progress parallel to developments of sciences, arts, commerce and culture

in it. Human languages are better to be used for progress of civilization, human harmony,

equality in all human societies, civility, and understanding among diverse segments of humankind. Different and diverse human languages highlight diversity and also make humankind look like a rainbow having different colors.
