Gangrened all over

Not a day passes when we don't get news of frauds in various government departments. The latest ones include the one about this huge corruption in TCP in cahoots with the ministry of commerce, a three billion rupees fraud in Mansehra Development Project and fraud in Pakistan Steel Mills where huge stocks of steel products have been sold at dirt cheap rates to the favourites. It appears the corruption scourge has infested every department, from the lowly chaprasi, patwari and the police constable to the highest in the land. The ultimate sufferer is the common man who has to pay for all this graft in the shape of higher taxes and higher prices. Is there no way to stop this cancer from eating into the vitals of the country? -DR ZAHEER ASGHAR KHAN, Lahore, via e-mail, May 17.
