ISLAMABAD (APP) - The Islamabad High Court Bar Association (IHCBA) has removed names of more than 1000 lawyers from its voters list for the upcoming elections of 2011. According to sources, lawyers belonging from Punjab were enjoying benefits of being voters of the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA), and IHCBA. Moreover, they were also involved in the politics of twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Contrary to the LHCBA members, the IHCBA members are not allowed to take part in political activities of the former bar and exclusion of LHCBA voters from IHCBA membership is meant to maintain balance between the two bar associations, the sources added. The prominent lawyers, whose names have excluded from the voters list of Islamabad High Court Bar Association include President of Supreme Court Bar Association Asma Jahangir, Aitzaz Ahsan, Abdul Hafeez Pir Zada, Sardar Asmatullah and many other presidents of bar associations of different cities, they said. According to the sources, the influence of lawyers based in Rawalpindi and other cities was gradually increasing and it was very important to settle this issue once and for ever. The IHCBA wants to distance itself from the politics of Rawalpindi based lawyers as it is an independent body of the Islamabad High Court, they added. When contacted, Sajjad Afzal Cheema, IHCBA president, confirmed the exclusion of LHCBA voters from IHCBA voters list. He said lawyers of any bar association can only exercise right of his vote for a single bar only. As IHC is a federal court and lawyers of other bars have right to appear in the court from their respective provinces but it does not mean that at the same time they will be allowed to cast their vote, he added. The IHCBA is a sole body of Islamabad based lawyers and has its separate identity, therefore, members of other provincial bar associations cannot be allowed to take part in its politics, he maintained. It is pertinent to mention here that after the exclusion of 900 voters from the IHCBA list of other high court bars, only 1050 voters will use their right of vote in the upcoming elections scheduled for June 9. However, a petition has also been moved in the IHC against the present voters list of IHCBA, praying the court to declare it null and void as Bar illegally removed more than 1000 lawyersnames from the list.
