LAHORE Certainly seeing its 'success in curbing and controlling terrorists, the Punjab government has given Special Branch yet another responsibility of identifying premises where adulterated edibles are being kept or processed, The Nation has learnt. This move is being seen as another money-minting star on the shoulders of the Branch, which has not any laurels for quite some time now. Special Branch will identify adulteration dens and provide a list to the Home Department. Special Squad comprising District Governments Food Department men will carryout operation against these dens with the help of local police. Though the responsibility of dealing with the issues relating to food adulteration falls under the domain of Secretary Health, Home Secretary Shahid Khan will directly supervise and monitor the process of identification and operation against these adulteration dens. According to the insiders, the decision of making Special Branch a part of anti adulteration campaign was taken at a recent meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif. They say that the Secretary Home and not the secretary Health has been assigned the responsibility of supervising anti adulteration campaign as Special Branch falls under control of the former officer. During the said meeting, the CM directed Home Secretary and Inspector General Police to submit a plan to establish a dedicated police force for curbing the menace of adulteration. The government has decided to involve Special Branch in operation against adulteration dens to make it more effective and result oriented, claimed an official at the Home Department. The officials at the Health Department, however, believe that it would only provide another money minting opportunity to the Police. They alleged that no adulteration den could work without the active patronisation of the Police. According to the sources, besides carrying out effective operation against adulteration mafia, the government is also making strategy to curb the menace of spurious drugs, less weighing and overcharging on essential commodities. Like the mechanism for anti adulteration campaign, three administrative secretaries will supervise operation against overcharging on essential commodities, less weighing and sale of spurious drugs. The operation against all these menaces will start simultaneously. Secretary Health will supervise operation against spurious drugs, Secretary Labour against less weighing while Secretary Local Government will be responsible for price control, said one of the participants of the meeting at CM Secretariat.
