RAWALPINDI  – Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) has started cleanliness of Nullah Leh at 11 different points on its own resources by releasing Rs 5 million to reduce possible flood risk in coming monsoon season.
Half of the portion of Nullah Leh was cleaned at the cost of Rs47 million last year but rest of the cleanliness and dredging of the said nullah was stopped due non-availability of additional Rs52 million.
Heaps of garbage at some parts of the Nullah Leh which were not cleaned last year have turned in sewage water reservoirs and could cause flood in low laying areas in coming monsoon season. 
The residents of the low laying areas have expressed concerns over possible flood risk which include Nadeem Colony, Jahangir Colony, Chaman Road, Dhok Charigh Din, Dhok Rata, Muslim Town, Sadiqabad, Arya Mohalla, Dhok Naj, Zia-ul-Haq Colony and some other adjoining areas.
It was learnt that WASA on its own resources have started dredging and cleanliness of Nullah Leh at 11 points where disruption in flow of sewage water was reported. Moreover, the cleanliness of Nullah Leh on limited basis would be completed by June 30.
Cleanliness of the nullah at different points would lessen flood risk in low laying areas.
APP adds: City District Government Rawalpindi (CDGR) has urged the people not to throw shopping bags into Nullah Leh. The Municipal Officer has asked people not to use shopping bags because this was the main hurdle in flow of water. Executive District Officer (EDO) Municipal Services Imtiaz Ahmed said this while reviewing the cleanliness arrangements of different areas sector A, sector B, sector C and sector D. He said linked nullahs and sewerage are being cleaned before the start of monsson season and added nullah cleanliness campaign has been geared up in the jurisdiction of Rawal Town and Potohar Town to save the people from possible flood.
He said a contingency plan has been devised to avoid flood in Rawalpindi and precautionary measures have been adopted in this regard.
He urged the people to play their role to keep the city neat and clean. Dr Mazhar Azeem District Officer Solid Waste Management said that all the nullahs are being scavenged.
