LAHORE – Despite being at 27th number in the seniority list, Prof Dr Liaqat Ali has been made Punjab University acting vice chancellor for 15 days, reliable sources told TheNation.

PU Vice Chancellor Mujahid Kamran departed for the UK on a two-week visit on May 20. He notified Liaqat as the acting vice chancellor until his return. According to the University Calendar, only the senior most professor can be given this charge.

The sources said Faculty of Science Dean Prof Dr Haris Rashid was the senior most professor and he stands at number one in the seniority list. They added that for the first time in the history of PU, a junior professor has been made the acting vice chancellor. The sources alleged that Dr Liaqat, who is considered a close aide of Kamran, already holds many portfolios.

According to them, Dr Liaqat is Hailey College of Commerce principal, Faculty of Commerce dean, Faculty of Life Sciences acting dean, Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences acting dean, Faculty of Law acting dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology acting dean, Institute of Agricultural Sciences acting director, Controller of Examinations (additional charge) and Hall Council deputy chairman(additional charge).

The sources said the PU Syndicate approved the recommendations of one man for one post, and the administration had taken back portfolios from several professors in past. They said Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr Amin Athar stood at number 45 in the seniority list.  Athar also holds many important portfolios.
