CII proposals rejected

LAHORE: The Awami Workers Party rejected the bill presented by the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII).

In a statement issued yesterday AWP stated the propositions put forth by CII represent the violent patriarchy and conservative morality that aims to subjugate women and perpetuate their oppression.

The CII, through its propositions encourages violence against women by condoning domestic abuse by stating that a husband can ‘lightly beat’ his wife.–Staff Reporter

They discount the heinous nightmare of domestic violence in which women often become prisoners in their own homes, kept captive by the violent men who are their loved ones

The AWP calls on the Punjab government to reject this bill and work on implementing the original Protection of Women Against Violence Act 2016. It is imperative that the state recognises the heinous nature of violence against women and not give into the misguided propositions of an out-dated religious body.
