Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Opposition leader Syed Khursheed Shah agreed on the name of Justice (retd) Nasirul Mulk as caretaker Prime Minister for the interim setup.
PM Abbasi and Opposition leader announced the name of caretaker PM during a press conference at Parliament house. Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq was also present at press conference.
Both PM Abbasi and Khursheed Shah lauded the role of speaker National Assembly during the whole process.
Moments earlier, according to media reports, the PM Abbasi and opposition leader had reached a breakthrough in the meeting held today to finalise the caretaker premier.
"We have selected a candidate for caretaker premier who will prove to play a democratic role in the upcoming general election," PM Abbasi said while addressing the press conference.
“No Pakistani can lift a finger (against) such a name,” PM Abbasi told reporters
Shah said, "Appreciate the role of National Assembly speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq in selection of caretaker premier."
"It was a challenge for all of us and all names that were put forth were credible and respectable individuals," he added. "We tried to make a decision which will be acceptable to the nation and Parliament."
He added further, "I am glad that Pakistan Peoples Party reached out to the opposition."
"Former CJP Nasirul Mulk has been nominated as caretaker premier," Shah announced.
This was the sixth meeting between the two, with the previous five ending in a deadlock.
Justice (retd) Nasirul Mulk served as 22nd Chief Justice of Pakistan from 2014-15.
Justice (retd) Nasirul Mulk hails from Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Justice Nasirul Mulk was a barrister-at-law of the Inner Temple, London. He was elected as secretary general, Peshawar High Court Bar Association in 1981.
He has also served as judge of the Peshawar High Court (PHC) and as advocate general of NWFP (now renamed K-P) for a year.
He was promoted as chief justice of Peshawar High Court on May 31, 2004, and as a Supreme Court judge on April 4, 2005.
Justice Mulk was one of the seven judges who refused to take an oath under PCO 2007 and was ultimately terminated from the Supreme Court
Justice Mulk later joined the judiciary on September 20, 2008 when Mulk was reinstated at the Supreme Court when he took a fresh oath as a judge of the Supreme Court with his seniority intact.
