WELLINGTON - A makeshift West Indies side made solid progress on the opening day of their tour match against a New Zealand XI in Lincoln on Wednesday. The tourists ousted Black Caps opener Peter Fulton for one and national captain Brendon McCullum for 22 after the New Zealanders won the toss and elected to bat.
The hosts declared at 227 for eight at stumps on a rain-interrupted day, with Hamish Rutherford top-scoring on 61. Sheldon Cottrell and Shannon Gabriel were the pick of the West Indies bowlers, both claiming two wickets. The West Indian team contains four New Zealanders, who were drafted in to make up the numbers as the rest of the Caribbean side wraps up a one-day series in India. As such, it is not being recognised as a first-class fixture. The first of three Tests begins next Tuesday in Dunedin.
