MIRPURKHAS - Sindh Irrigation Drainage Authority (SIDA) official Niaz Chandio has said that efforts are continuing to ensure water supply to the tail-end areas despite the acute shortage of water in Nara Canal’s command areas.
He added drastic measures were being taken for the purpose. He was briefing the local media persons here on Monday at the office of Nara Canal director after attending a meeting with local MPAs, MNAs, notables of the area as well as members of Nara canal area water board and irrigation department officers.
He further said that 17 old development schemes were nearing completion while new 13 schemes, including lining of the channels, were being tendered.
He said that 7700 cusecs of water was being supplied to the Nara Canal head against design 18000 cusecs of water that was very less as a result of which acute shortage of water persisted and rotation programme was being implemented to control the crisis.
In reply to a question about 400 illegal pumping machines operating at Nara canal, he said that the meeting had decided to remove them without any delay and action would be taken against those installing them.
Earlier, a high-level meeting was held in which SIDA chairman, SIDA managing director Wali Muhammad, XENs of Jamrao, Mithrao and Thar canal members area water board Zahid Bhurgari, MNA Mir Munawar Ali Khan Talpure, MPA Mir Haji Hayat Talpure, chairman district council Mirpurkhas Mir Anwer Ali Khan Talpure, chairman area water board Mir Tarique Talpure participated.
