The Punjab government has allocated Rs411 million under a three-year project for boosting vegetable production in the province. Sources said that the project would be launched in 24 districts of Punjab and 312 model fields of onion, garlic, tomato, green chilli, potato and other vegetables would be established. The government is learnt to have nominated district monitors to monitor the progress of the project and production of vegetables. The fields of potato will only be established in Khanewal district. Sources said that tunnel farming would also be done under the project and vegetables in 175 model fields would be grown under this method.

According to details, out of 312 model plots, as many as 16 would be set up in Multan district out of which three would be sowed with onion, four garlic and nine chilly.

Similarly, vegetables under tunnel farming method would be grown in 15 plots of Multan district while Lodhran will have 10 tunnel farming fields, Khanewal 20, Vehari 17 and Muzaffargarh 10. Similarly, a total of 12 ordinary fields will be established in Lodhran, 16 Khanewal, 13 Vehari, nine Muzaffargarh, 15 Bahawalpur, 14 Rahim Yar Khan and 12 Bahawalnagar.

Punjab Government sources disclosed that the vegetable production competitions would be held in each district as the motive behind launching this project was to boost vegetable production in the province and provide citizens quality farm products.

BURIED ALIVE: A father of seven lost his life when he got buried alive under the debris of a well here at Sewra chowk near Ahmad Colony on Monday. The Rescue 1122 sources confirmed that the labourer namely Naseer was killed in the incident.

"He was digging a well for a sewerage gutter. When he dug as deep as 20 feet, the walls of the well collapsed and he got buried," said Abdul Jabbar, Rescue 1122 spokesman, while giving details. He added that the rescue team reached the spot in nine minute and started operation to recover the buried labourer. However, the well again collapsed and an excavator was brought to locate him. The body was brought out and handed over to the family in the evening.
