THE HAGUE - Dutch Queen Maxima has contracted a kidney infection and will cut short a state visit to China to fly back to the Netherlands for treatment, royal officials announced on Tuesday. The queen and her husband, King Willem-Alexander, are on their first-ever state visit to the Asian powerhouse, to improve trade relations. “Upon arrival she will be admitted to Bronovo Hospital (in The Hague) for further tests,” the government’s information service (RVD) said. “The decision was taken after consultation with doctors,” it added in a statement. During the visit, Queen Maxima “contracted a kidney infection, for which she received medication,” the RVD said.–AFP

“Her symptoms such as a fever and back pain however have not sufficiently abated.” Dutch public news broadcaster NOS has shown images from China in the past few days, including Maxima with Chinese President Xi Jinping at a state banquet. Inaugurated with her husband in 2013, Maxima, known for her dress style and business acumen, did not publicly appear to be in any discomfort. The state visit ends on Thursday after which the king is to return home, the RVD said.
