KARACHI - The law enforcement agencies (LEAs) chalked out the counter terrorism strategy for the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) to be observed on November 10.

Security agencies have informed about the possible terrorist attack during the Chehlum procession and decided to the beef up the security arrangements to prevent terrorists seeking to achieve their illegitimate goals.

Besides deployment of extra contingent of the law enforcers, the government is likely to suspend the cellular phone services as well as ban on pillion riding.

In view of the ongoing operation against terrorist organizations throughout the county and threat perception on the occasion of Chehlum, it is recommended that, the signals of mobile phones as well as internet may please jammed and ban on pilling is recommended to be imposed on Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) in Karachi,” reads a notification issued by ADIGP Establishment Amjad Hayat.

The Karachi police is requested the authorities concerned for the aerial surveillance of the designated route of the Chehlum procession.  The central procession would be reached to its destination at Imambargah at Kharadar by passing its traditional routes Nishter Park, Mehfil-e-Khurasan, MA Jinnah Road, Mansfield street again MA Jinnah Road, Bolton Market, Bombay Bazaar, Nawab Muhabbat Khanjee Road to Anjuman Hussainian Iranian.

The police is also requested to the authorities concerned to provide the bomb disposal units and Canine Units (K-9) of Pakistan army may to Karachi police for sweeping of all the sensitive venues of Majalis and processions, especially the route of the main procession in coordination with the local police to ensure that nothing harmful or explosive material is kept or planted by any anti state elements at the venues of Majalis or en-route of the procession.

Sources privy to the security plan said that extraordinary security arrangements are being finalized for the security of processions, Majalis and other gatherings in connection with the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS).

According to the security plan, about 46,300 police personnel would perform security duty in the province on the occasion while in Karachi about 17,000 police personnel would perform the security duty.  As many as 5,727 police officers and jawans would be deployed for the security of the main procession in the city.

Sharp shooters would be deployed on rooftops of high rise buildings. Strict surveillance would be maintained through watch towers around Nishter Park. In Karachi some 100 big and small processions would be taken out while 460 Majalis would be held.

It is worth mentioning here that last Islamic month Muharram have had considered highly sensitive passed without even a single minor attack. Police official wished to be anonymous revealed that security agencies have successfully counter the terrorist groups operating in the city and sought to create law and order situation in the month of Muharram but it would be difficult to ruled out the risk factor because multiple militants groups operating in the city and seeking an opportunity to carry out terrorist activities ruined the peace of city.
