ISLAMABAD Federal Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Syed Naveed Qamar Monday informed the National Assembly that the gas companies had earned Rs 138.6 billion under the head of natural gas charges from October last year to March this year. During the question hour, the Minister also informed the House that a record number of thirty-seven oil and gas blocks were auctioned during the last one year for exploration. The Minister said that exploration activity had picked up as a number of companies had entered the field and many more had shown interest. He said for the first time offshore drilling had also been initiated. The minister said survey was being carried out to import gas from Iran while negotiations were also underway for import of gas from Turkmenistan. Minister for Defence Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar told the House that PIA was planning to operate 310 Hajj flights during forthcoming Hajj and it earned an income of eight point two billion rupees from last Hajj. Responding to another question, Mukhtar said new Islamabad International Airport would hopefully be completed by 2013. He told the House that Airblue aircraft that crashed in the Margalla Hills in Islamabad was being reconstructed to find out what could have caused the accident. In a written reply, Minister for Ports and Shipping Babar Khan Ghouri said there was no proposal to review the agreement with Port of Singapore Authority for operation of Gwadar Port. He said Gwadar Port Authority had received about thirty-three million rupees as share of revenue from Port operation by Port of Singapore Authority. The Minister pointed out that the port was operational but its potential could not be fully exploited without completion of M-8, which was fifty percent complete, because of additional transportation charges that had to be incurred by importers and exporters.
