KARACHI - All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) on Thursday urged the Election Commission of Pakistan to look into the decision of reserving the rights of vote of Overseas Pakistanis. It demanded revision of this kind of decision which is based on injustice with the millions of Pakistanis living abroad. In a statement issued here, APML Central Information Secretary Aasia Ishqaue said that the ECP had decided few days back that 4 million Overseas Pakistanis would not be able to exercise their right to vote from their country of origin.“Overseas Pakistanis are the backbone of country’s economy. They are living abroad just for the betterment of their families and economy of the country despite many hurdles so that they should be allowed to cast their votes in next general election,” she urged. She said that ECP’s reason behind this decision was “legal hurdles and the unavailability of an adequate voting mechanism.” She said that the government was bound to provide all kind of legal and technical assistance to the ECP as all Pakistanis living in country or abroad can cast their votes.Aasia said that vote was fundamental right of every Pakistani according to Constitution so that any government cannot snatch this constitutional right from anybody on the basis of very minor reasons. She said that the ECP’s team had registered four million overseas voters spread across 106 countries, which was a step that brought hopes in the hearts of the said Pakistanis so if the ECP would not reverse its recent decision, this would bring a sense of deprivation among the Overseas Pakistanis.Aasia said that the government used to earn billions of rupees in the head of remittances which was possible only because of hard work of our four million Overseas Pakistanis so they all should be rewarded with a right to cast votes in next general elections. The APML leader said that next general election would be crucial for the country as people were now more aware and they would use their votes for right political parties and leaders. She said that vote of Overseas Pakistanis would bring real change in the political scenario of the country so that the ECP should look into its decision and reverse it without any delay
