After three days of deliberations, the Energy Conference in Islamabad has come to an end with new suggestions for the consumers only. Too bad all of these have been rejected by the public which seems resolved to defy them. I have the following questions for the ruling junta; 1. Why was this conference held after the long wait of almost two agonizing years for the people of Pakistan? Why not earlier? Has the news of power outages taken two long years to reach Islamabad? And, then, this government also keeps harping the mantra of being the 'peoples government? 2. All that conference has been able to propose as a solution is that people should do energy conservation. And not a single word on what measures the government would take to increase generation by even a single watt? May be they are hoping to hold another such conference in two or three years (three years is max they can have) in which Raja Sahib and his masters would probably come up with the solution that people should stop using electricity altogether? 3 Has the government tendered even an apology to the people for this mess? Has any of them said even a word on austerity by the government itself? The use of AC in offices of grade 20 and below is restricted to post-11 a. m. Does the government know that most of them do not come to their offices before 11 a.m.? 4. Have we heard of any short and long term plans of the government to combat this problem? Have we heard about dams being constructed, or even had a look at their blueprints? And why was the conference held in camera? -AMJAD H. MIRZA, Lahore, April 26.
