Violence seems to have become an integral part of the politics of Karachi, where tolerance for any dissent is no longer acceptable. When the Supreme Court of Pakistan gave a verdict declaring Justice Deedar's candidature for NAB in violation of constitution, a mob emerged near the vicinity of Bilawal House, which is the most secured house in Karachi and ransacked and burnt buses which led to many deaths. Recently, a similar incident of a violent attack occurred on a popular restaurant located in Clifton's posh area in the vicinity of the same house following the ill-advised statement of Shahbaz Sharif. The issue is that this intolerance does not bode well for democracy to survive and flourish in Pakistan, where in spite of freedom of expression and availability of several electronic media channels, violence is being resorted to as a tool for political expression. Karachi which is already suffering from politics of violence cannot afford such resort to irrational behaviour on the part of a political party, which forms both the federal government and provincial governments in three of the four federating units. The elected PM of Pakistan should have behaved with more responsibility instead of politicizing the issue of making more provinces. If a public political point scoring debate is to be launched in the media, or at public meetings, than everybody has a right to express his opinion. If there is no tolerance for hearing about creating more administrative units in a particular province, than the politicians from that province should restrain themselves about discussing division of other provinces. In any case creation of more provinces is a democratic right of the people residing in those areas. These provinces, if found feasible and beneficial for welfare of common man should be made in accordance with constitutional process defined in our constitution. The government in Sindh has failed to protect the lives of its citizens where thousands of citizens have been killed in target killings. The number of target killing fatalities is much more than the total people killed in Swat, North Waziristan and FATA either by drone attacks or terrorism. With power comes responsibility and this the elected provincial government of Sindh has failed to exhibit in the presence of democratic institutions which are weakened by such irresponsible behaviour. The PPP which was formed by ZAB never resorted to parochial politics. MALIK TARIQ ALI, Lahore, April 27.
